Domain Name Monetization, Buying and Selling for Profit

Domain Name Monetization is the process buying and selling domain names for profit.

But wait, before you start putting your “firstNameLastName.com” for sale on the market, its important that you understand whether or not someone might even consider buying your domain name for their business or even possibly resell it to someone else.

I own several pages of domain names that are up for sale and some to be the foundation for a nice MFA or marketing portal in the future. Its important to note however, that I didn’t simply decide to buy “a-z.com” (example), because I thought it might be cool, but if I did buy that domain name, there was research involved in buying a domain name for a future prospect.

Domain Name Appraisals

I’ve come across some tools on the web that can help you appraise how much your domain name is worth. Simply searching for “domain name appraisals” or “how much is my domain name worth” in google will provide you with enough websites telling you to submit the domain names you want to have appraised and they’ll reply back. However there are companies such as, GoDaddy and Sedo (UK), that offer domain name appraisal services.

Essentially, when domain names are appraised, the general criteria are as follows:

  • Top Level Domain Extention Score (.com, .net, etc.)
  • Length Score (shorter is better)
  • Unwanted Characters Score
  • Number of Words (fewer words is better)
  • Potential Use (Meaningful domains with obvious commercial potential are most valuable)
  • Overall Market Demand
  • Search Engine Scores (Google, MSN, etc.)
  • Value of Similar Domain Names

Buying The Right Domain Name for Your Business

Even if you’re not in the business of buying and selling domain names, by understanding the general criteria to follow when appraising domain names, this can help you understand how to buy the right domain name for your business.
