How Much Does it Cost to Repair a Canon Lens in Canada?

Did you drop it? Did it accidentally tumble out of your camera bag like one of my lenses did? I can only guess that this is what happened to some of you. I’m gonna show you what to do in case something like this happens and how to pick up your heart off the ground; after all, its not the end of the world.

Unfortunately, It Can Happen To You

Definitely, not fun if you break a lens, especially if its your favourite, walk-around, does-most-of-it-all, lens. I hate to admit, this happened to the first lens I bought, my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L lens… yes, my L lens I paid around $1300 for taxes in. It’s not something you think will ever happen. I wasn’t even doing a shoot for myself, I was taking my camera out for an afternoon to take photos of my friend – ridiculous.

Most People Don’t Insure their Camera Equipment

For the life of me, when this happened, I had my camera equipment added onto my insurance policy shortly after I began my spending crazy money on this expensive hobby. What surprises me is, there are many people with similar equipment to mine and possibly spent more money and don’t insure their equipment. What’s interesting is, if you have home insurance, it only costs you several dollars each month to insure your equipment. So, if something bad happens to your equipment, ie. you drop it and it breaks, you don’t need to worry about what the repair costs will be.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Canon Lens?

If your lens is outside the manufacturer’s warranty, you will have to pay a minimum $319.00 + Shipping $10.00 + GST/HST $16.45 (even if you don’t live in Ontario). The $319.00 covers diagnostic and repair up to $100 in parts.

After they receive the lens from you and determine that the repair requires more than $100 in parts, they will notify you via email and let you know the repair will cost more and will need you to pay more in order for them to proceed and complete the repair.

Things like the Zoom Barrel Unit, Guide Barrel Assembly and Focusing USM Assembly were replaced. Total additional cost was $336.43 bringing the total repair costs to $681.88. Given the fact that a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L costs around $900 new and about $600 used, if you don’t plan on insuring your equipment, I’d recommend going for at least a used version of that lens. Scary repair costs.
