Twitter Over Capacity? – I Just Want To Tweet, Is That Too Much To Ask?

So there I was, leaning over my laptop keyboard, reading this great article about the upcoming Pacquiao vs Hatton fight. The post had a “Tweet This!” button. Naturally, excited to tweet this story I liked and wanted to tell all my followers about what I just read, I clicked it and surprisingly I got a message saying, “Twitter is Over Capacity”. At first I was pretty shocked and bummed because I couldn’t Tweet! but after a second, I thought, “Well, its about time! :)”

Despite the fact that I couldn’t tweet that article right away, I was really happy that Twitter has become so popular and widely adopted that its going to have to adapt to the huge growth and overwhelming popularity just like YouTube is forced to give you the “We’re currently upgrading our system, we should be back to 100% shortly” ;)

Twitter’s Growth:

Twitter was founded in March 2006 and its traffic has steadily grown over the last couple of years. This February and March however, Twitter has experienced noticeable growth illustrated below in a chart comparing itself and YouTube.com traffic over the last year:

I know Im not comparing apples to apples here, but just the fact that the line is not simply skimming the bottom when compared to YouTube is a big deal. I mean, what was I going to do, compare it to another Microsoft “me too” product like, Microsoft Vine?

If I go to twitter directly, other people don’t seem to be experiencing the same issue. I mean, one of my accounts is actually getting what I call, Twitter Spam; they’re twitting automatically using tools like FriendFeed and tweet 10 things at the same time; my wall doesn’t look very interesting right now :P

Has this every happened to you? What tool are you using to tweet? Let me know in your response below:
