Video SEO: Vimeo Videos Rank High in Google SERP

Vimeo has been out for over a year most definitely. I started using it last year after I discovered it off a blog. I started using it more often to drive traffic to one of my newer blogs promoting Filipino Celebrities. I call it Video SEO and often refer to it as Video Sharing Leverage.

Ever since Google acquired Youtube, videos began ranking within the top 3 search engine results in Google. I first started experimenting with Video SEO when Apple’s Macbook Air was launched back in January 2008. Since then, I was fortunate to lead Travel Alberta’s first social media campaign for their Ski Canadian Rockies website and go on to manage other social media campaigns for various clients.

What I’ve discovered is that videos will only rank if there are enough videos on YouTube relevant to your search term. Primarily, its YouTube videos, but on occasion I’ll see a DailyMotion or MetaCafe video right beside a YouTube video.

Video’s rank high in search engine results pages (SERP) because their video page is optimized with the video’s title, there’s a description about the video and there’s related video (content) included on the page. So, don’t forget how important it is title your videos properly.

You may have noticed that on occasion, Metacafe or another video sharing site’s video may rank higher, but the advantage of using YouTube and Vimeo is that their video description areas allow you to put a link to your landing page. Other sites that don’t allow links include MySpace video and AOL video.

Pros: What makes Vimeo a fantastic platform to share your videos is that its focus right now seems to be whats most important to you: the video. Sure, Vimeo has an advertisement about upgrading to Vimeo Pro, but its located in the middle right section and not the top right like YouTube. Vimeo came out with their HD Video player months before YouTube and doesnt take as long as YouTube to load (but I guess that depends on your computer and connection speed). Less videos about your niche meaning its easier to rank for your keywords.

Cons: Their video pages aren’t optimized for related videos as YouTube and their user-base is still relatively tiny compared to YouTube.

In short, Video SEO should be part of your SEO arsenal. People are more likely to click images and photos than contextual links; having your video’s thumbnail at the top of a Google SERP will likely receive more visitors when everyone is already optimizing their sites or pages exactly the same way – how original… :P

(pssst, King… who’s Charice Pempengco? She’s a young Filipina singer that got noticed from YouTube; yes, YouTube rocks!. She’s been featured on Oprah, sang at David Foster’s concert in Las Vegas last year, “David Foster and Friends” and has also sang with Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli)
