“Thelonious” WordPress 3.0 is now officially released. I’ve been waiting for the stable version to come out since its initial buzz. I just finished upgrading my WordPress a few moments ago. I noticed a problem already… watch the video or scroll down to see a bug i found.

So the bug I discovered was when you click the add photo button beside “Upload/Insert” it doesn’t pop up in a new tiny window, it opens it in the parent window. What does that mean? well for starters, you have to click back twice to go back to the edit post screen and 2 you cant insert image into post; it just doesn’t work.

One of the great things about WordPress is that its URL Friendly for important things like SEO. When you’re creating a new post, after you enter your post’s title, WordPress will automatically create the permalink or URL (make sure you updated the permalink settings in your admin for this to work) for your post. But because WordPress can tell when you’ve stopped typing in the title area or when you’ve clicked away like into the content area, it won’t update the permalink automatically if you decide to edit your post’s title later.

If you have a version of 2.9+ installed, in your wp-includes folder, you will find a file called, post-thumbnail-template.php. Inside, the get_the_post_thumbnail() function is what will allow you to display your post’s thumbnail or thumbnails for a list of posts such as on your homepage or category (archive) pages. The get_the_post_thumbnail WordPress function will return your thumbnail in an html img tag so all you have to do is call the function where you want your thumbnail to be displayed, then style it using css.

This activates the “Post Thumbnail” widget in your post editor which will appear just below the category selection widget. There, you will find a “Set thumbnail” link that will pop up your standard wordpress image browser where you just select the image you want to use for the thumbnail.

In addition, this code will also activate an option in your image browser, “Use as Thumbnail”, which allows you to set your post’s thumbnail at the same time right after you upload an image.

The last thing you need to do is insert the following code to display the thumbnail in your post or post list:

<?php echo get_the_post_thumbnail($post->ID, 'thumbnail'); ?>

Then for each of your posts, set the post thumbnail and it will be displayed wherever you called the function.

Here are the options:

Usage Syntax:
<?php echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $id, $size, $attr ); ?>

Usage Parameters:
$id

(int) (Required) Post ID.

Default: None

$size

(int) (Optional) Image size.

Default: ‘thumbnail’

$attr

(int) (Optional)

Default: None

Usage Examples:
get_the_post_thumbnail($id);                  // without parameter -> Thumbnail

get_the_post_thumbnail($id, ‘thumbnail’);     // Thumbnail
get_the_post_thumbnail($id, ‘medium’);        // Medium resolution
get_the_post_thumbnail($id, ‘large’);         // Large resolution

get_the_post_thumbnail($id, array(100,100) ); // Other resolutions

What it outputs:
The get_the_post_thumbnail WordPress function will return your thumbnail in an html img tag so all you have to do is call the function where you want your thumbnail to be displayed, then style it using css.

<?img src="your_selected_thumbnail.jpg" />

How to use your post’s first image’s thumbnail in WordPress. This is a great tutorial because once you upload an image to your post, it’s thumbnail version will be shown wherever you choose to display the thumbnail even without actually inserting the image into your post or using a custom field.

By default, if you upload an image to your post, WordPress automatically creates a thumbnail version of that image (the default size of your thumbnail can be set in the Settings > Media menu option in your WordPress control panel. Mine is set to 150×150). If you want to display that image without using this custom get function, you can either use the get_custom_meta function or for all WordPress 2.9+ installations, you can use the get_post_thumbnail() function which is easier between the two.

But, if you want to have wordpress automatically get your post’s first image’s thumbnail, here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Add the following function to your functions.php file that can be found in Appearance > Editor, then click “Theme Functions” link on the right:

function get_post_thumbnail() {
$files = get_children('post_parent='.get_the_ID().'&post_type=attachment&post_mime_type=image');
if($files) :
$keys = array_reverse(array_keys($files));
$j=0;
$num = $keys[$j];
$image=wp_get_attachment_image($num, 'large', false);
$imagepieces = explode('"', $image);
$imagepath = $imagepieces[1];
$thumb=wp_get_attachment_thumb_url($num);
print $thumb;
else:
print "http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/default-post-thumb.jpg";
endif;
}

2. Second, insert “<?php get_post_thumbnail();?>” within an img html tag like the example below:

<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
<div class="clearfloat">
<img src="<?php get_post_thumbnail(); ?>" alt="<?php the_title(); ?>" class="front-list_thumbnail" />
<div class="title"><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php the_title(); ?></a></div>
</div>
<?php endwhile; ?>

3. Lastly, create a default thumbnail image that will be used in step 1 in case there is no image in your post.
I named my file, “default-post-thumb.jpg”

That’s it. Let me know how this works out for you.

Its completely, free, translated in several languages (english, simplified chinese and italian).
