iPhone Web Development Limitations

With the launch of the new Apple iPhone, there’s been a lot of discussion about how this is going to affect our web development efforts in the future. G4TV.com recently published a nice little article about the web development specifications, or rather the limitations, of viewing web sites on this full web browsing capable handheld device:

  • 10MB max html size for web page
  • Javascript limited to 5 seconds run time
  • Javascript allocations limited to 10MB
  • 8 documents maximum loaded on the iPhone due to page view limitations
  • Quicktime used for audio and video

Its also mentioned that the new iPhone has limited javascript support and does not support flash. I just find it funny how all the major vlogging social websites use flash now to show videos to prevent people from downloading the videos directly on to their computer. And unless new devices like the iPhone start supporting flash, iPhone owners wont be able to view youtube.com and break.com videos on their beautiful multi-touch screen.

According to a recent article by Forbes.com, “Apple’s iPhone: Not A Disrupter … Yet, Apple intends on producing 10 million units of the first generation iPhone by the end of 2008 (essentially 1% of the cell phone market).

I’m actually really interested in buying an iPhone; partly cool factor but also for convenience, but I think Im going to be waiting until the second generation iPhone comes out before I open my wallet to Apple. One of things I’ve read online is that it took a guy 16 hours to get it finally set his iPhone up to his AT&T carrier and although it took forever to finally get it working, he doesnt regret buying it anymore.

If you are intereted in web development for the iPhone, Marketcircle has a free iPhone web simulator tool (open source) that developers can use to test out their latest web 2.0 application on :P
